Talk about a marathon on the green!
This weekend, a familiar local face is pulling off a massive endurance challenge right here in Onalaska, and it’s all to save lives on the other side of the world.
Bob Newberry, a retired Winona State University professor and proud member of the Rotary Club of La Crosse-Valley View, is getting ready to walk and play 200 holes of golf in just 12 hours.
The epic challenge kicks off weather permitting on Sunday, June 21st or Monday, June 22nd at Coulee Golf Bowl.
The Goal: Bringing Critical Care to Tanzania
Bob isn’t just trying to break a personal record; he’s on a mission to build a digital X-ray lab at the Chihoni Medical Health Center in Tanzania. Right now, families in this region lack basic diagnostic equipment, meaning common conditions like broken bones, pneumonia, and tuberculosis can lead to permanent disability or worse.
Partnering with the nonprofit International Health Partners and his local Rotary club, Bob is making sure that 100% of the funds raised go directly to buying and installing this life-saving equipment.
When asked about the intense physical challenge ahead, Bob didn’t sugarcoat it:
“Playing 200 holes in 12 hours sounds foolish, and maybe it is. But if doing something foolish here helps a doctor in Tanzania diagnose a child, a mother, or an elder who otherwise might not receive treatment, then every hole is worth it.”
How You Can Help
You can back Bob’s incredible 12-hour mission by making a flat donation or pledging a set amount per golf hole completed. Check out this YouTube video to see exactly how this fundraiser will change lives at the Chihoni Medical Health Center.
Ready to support? Here is how to give:
- Venmo: Scan or search @VVRLAX (Valley View Rotary) on Venmo. Crucial step: Make sure to type “X-Ray” in the memo field so it goes straight to the project!
- Check: Make checks payable to Valley View Rotary with “X-ray” written in the memo line.
If you are out at Coulee Golf Bowl early next week, keep an eye out for Bob, cheer him on, and let’s help him cross that 200-hole finish line!
